Something is brewing with the athletics dept/football program

WANTED: Passionate Sycamore Fanatics. That You?

I really don't think it is NEGATIVE because you don't want a build-up to something that is bad news, only good news. I was a bit surprised a writer would "tweet" or whatever it was, such a comment but now I feel it is going to be anti-climatic because the answer has taken too long to surface. Since I enjoy Todd's blogs and columns, I will forgive him, but come on folks, let's get it over with. Probably accomplishing just what he wants on here, that's for sure.

I'm going to guess it is what I've heard from a couple people and it has been something discussed before on here. I consider what I've been told significant, but not major.

An announcement concerning a new football stadium could, stress the word "could," be just that a major donor has come forward to start the process with a major gift. Then, fundraising would start, and we could still be 7 or 8 years away from the thing actually being built. No idea if this is what the "big news" is, but I don't think it would have to be that they are starting construction.

What else could be particularly impactful to the football team, but also to ISU Athletics in general? A statue of Dennis Raetz??? (sarcasm meter...)

With what Golden said, it really must be something having to do with the football team. I doubt that we're moving up to FBS...:bigsmile:

In light of what Jason just posted, maybe they're going to start considering out of state players as in state after a year??? That would be a great thing...

What does that mean exactly? Is there a difference with the current OOS full scholarships and what would be provided based on this announcement?

Damn! I wanted a new stadium!!! :mad:

Still, great news and another road block removed from the efforts of all our coaches!!!

I see in his follow up tweets that it means that we are now fully funded for 63 scholarships versus the previous funding level of 43 due to the out of state split. This will be big for recruiting, and will probably lead to getting even better in state players, as well as some additional OOS recruits.

That is great news. Without hearing the details, it likely means that we can afford to recruit more out-of-state students at a cost the same as Indiana kids, and without paying the much more expensive out-of-state tuition.

Boda, I am sure this was the announcement you thought it was. Not too sure why that possibility never occurred to me during the past 12 hours. This "inequity" in recruiting was brought up to Dr. B. when those football alumni met with him over a year ago if my memory serves me correctly. Thanks to RP, Dr. Bradley and that alumni group for fixing this long-standing issue. It is a BIG development for the future of ISU football. Hope they immediately head back to Pennsylvania where we recruited heavily during the 60's and 70's with so much success.

I am still SO glad that RP stayed at Indiana State. He came down to talk during the scrimmage last Saturday, and had some nice words to say. He is just a class act, and a real asset to the university and the athletic programs. Needless to say, he's a huge part of the turnaround in the football program!

He flat out is the best thing to hit Indiana State in decades. (well right there with Dr. B). He "get's it" to use my favorite expression about the new regime at ISU. I imagine that we'll eventually loose him but I prefer to not think about that. Let's just continue to be supportive to ISU athletics and the administration and ride this wave of optimism and accomplishments. A few more years of this and it will help get better qualified people to replace them when they do leave.

so this means that we went from 43 schollies to 63? can someone please walk me through this. and why couldn't we do this before?

My understanding is that we could have always done 63, however, ISU chose to set a limit.. Out of State scholarships cost more.. so our scholarship budget was set at 63 IN STATE scholarships. You could do fewer in-states, to cover the out-of state portion.

X scholarship costs 50 (completely arbitrary number)
Y scholarship costs 100

Our scholarship budget was set at 63x 50 = $3150 total
Sports were able to adjust the scholarships according to the total budget amount. (eg: 43 total scholarships = 22 in-state and 21 out of state - 22x50=1100 and 21x100=2100, 1100+2100=$3,200).

Now the amount MAY be based on 50/50 split of real values (instead of in-state values):
32x50=1600
31x100=3100
1600+3100=$4,700

That's MY understanding anyway...

The difference between 43 and 63 full scholarships.

Isn't this out of state vs. in state scholarship thing just a matter of financial trickery? It costs ISU the exact same amount to put a Hoosier butt in a classroom seat as it does a "foreigner," but we just charge out of staters more money since our Hoosier taxes help fund the school.

In the terms of scholarships because regularly the only people on full academic scholly are the out of state kids in football

From what I understood...DIV 1 schools can recruit out of state and it still equaled one scholarships....1AA schools recruited out of state and it counted as two scholarships...but the 1AA school can get passed it somehow don't remember...ISU could have already had this done but never attempted until now.....why haven't they....who knows...I'm not going to blame andi myers for everything...but most of it...LOL...just joking...

The topic of in-state vs. out-of-state scholarships....

and the cost has been a major issue for all the sports, but football especially, for years.

All the MVC schools except one would designate out of state student-athletes as in-state student-athletes after a brief residency period (sometimes as short as six months.

It made for a large inequaity in recruiting for Indiana State. Dennis Raetz tried to get the school to make changes, as have other coaches from other sports.

Bally is correct. When the ISU football alumni met with Dr. Bradley and Mr. Prettyman last fall prior to the Homecoming game, this was a major topic of concern for the former players and coaches. It was brought up several times.

But now it appears that it's finally happened. Congrats to all who made it happen.

Does anyone have the OFFICIAL name of that group of football alumni? There is a title but I can't for the life of me remember it, and I know a bunch on the committee.
