WANTED: Passionate Sycamore Fanatics. That You?

Would it have really mattered what his answer was? No coach is ever going to just come right out and say “I’m really interested in other jobs” or anything to that effect. They will give the standard coach speak of “I’m focused on this season and this team” etc and then they will all of a sudden be gone.

I’m not saying JS will leave for DePaul or any other job. Maybe he will. Maybe he won’t. What I am saying is that his comments won’t impact me one way or another. I’ve heard too many coaches over the year say they have zero interest in a job only to take that same job a week later than to put any stock in a coach’s response to questions like this.

And for me, it’s not him asking the question that is a bad look but completely fumbling the ball with the tweet. Not that hard to get that one straight and you completely drop the ball.

You are absolutely right on this. I think my problem is emotions right now, if I am being honest. I have longed for a chance to see my school, the university I have loved since I was a little boy be nationally relevant in basketball and HERE IT IS. It's a dream come true sort of feeling that I hope only continues to get better. I realize its difficult for a mid major to hold on to a coach of this caliber and the only way you do is because they love it here. I so desperately want this to last because i know it will help get Indiana State back on the right track enrollment wise and help build a strong community relationship. I promise to try to keep the emotions in check and not let what may or may not happen with regards to HCJS keep me from living this dream season. LETS GO SYCAMORES!!

Disagree… He couldn’t wait to shoot that shot. It was on his I’m a newspaper guy bingo card.

Of all the things you could talk about with this team - that’s his question. That’s weak. Not to mention his name has been floated for two weeks now. And floated by mostly fans like us creating speculation and wish lists… Nothing else. He’s had at minimum two chances on the weekly MVC call to ask it - but he couldn’t wait to ask that tonight. Good for him.

Furthermore, if you’re going to ask that sort of a question you shouldn’t need a follow-up tweet to provide clarity. You should get his words right the first time.
I don't always agree with SSOM, but when I do, it's a hard YES.

I will admit I am biased, as I grew up the son of a newspaper man (he’s in the Indiana Journalism Hall of Fame). Reporters are kind of like referees from the standpoint that they always seem to make at least some of the people unhappy. People love them when they ask questions they want asked and people hate them when they ask questions they don’t want asked.

I think it was a fair question to ask and I think it was fair for Schertz not to really answer. It’s also fair to like or dislike the question.

I have given this some more thought today and I am coming around to SSOM's rationale. I was originally giving Tickle the benifit of the doubt, but now i agree.....just the wrong time to ask that. Don't let this go to your head Twitch, but you have changed my opinion on this...that feels weird to admit 😁🤷‍♂️

I can respect that. While I don’t agree with asking the question right now, I see what you’re saying.

What I can’t get on board with is misquoting him and then clarifying what he meant, which wasn’t remotely close to what Hunter tweeted the first time. That’s just poor journalistic integrity.

Is anyone else insulted the question is in relation to the DePaul job?

Right now, that job is not better than this one. The salary is literally the only thing going for it and a portion of that is immediately negated with the increased tax burden in Chicago/Illinois versus Haute/Indiana. If we can get our salary up, it is a downward move. I don't care they're in the Big East... it's an uphill battle compared to almost every program in that conference.

No reason to ask that question at that time and place after a hard fought comeback win. There was so much more Hunter could have talked about. Ask that question after a practice here at home if you want, but not after an emotional hard fought road win. What facts did he have other than people throwing it out there on twitter?

I think like @BlueBleeder above... The easiest thing to do at this point is either say; "I agreed with SSOM all along" or "SSOM changed my mind and was right all along". Either is fine and shows personal growth!

But you can't really be on the side of it being an acceptable question - the only person that can say it's acceptable is someone related to someone in the journalist hall of fame that being @King of Jones Hall Okay we get it - you have a soft spot.

Everyone else - sack up and realize it was a stupid question to ask in that moment after a big road win, it was stupid to ask because it's based purely on twitter/fan speculation and prognostication, it was a stupid question to ask because it's a terrible program/job to take considering what JS has going for him here... Almost no excuse for him asking that question. The question was so stupid - that I really haven't even given a single thought to how JS answered it because I'm pretending he didn't answer it and that it never came up.

I agree it could have been asked at a better time.

Because, as we've explained, we've come to the fork in the road where the hard decision needs to be made.

We can eliminate the financial albatross and sink those scare resources into programs that have a chance to make us nationally relevant or we can continue on the same path, enjoy this year and then likely fall back to Earth when HCJS leaves because he doesn't have the program support necessary to build a perennial MVC title contender and NCAA tournament regular.

You football folks want to keep handwaving away the math and the reality. This topic isn't going away and will continue to get louder with his continued success. The football forum still exists so feel free to hang out over there or just ignore this topic when it comes up since you don't wish to discuss it in good faith.
You anti football guys just keep on talking. No one who would be making that decision reads any of preaching.

It's not "anti football"...

It's anti robbing a bank, dumping the money in the back seat, rolling all the windows down and driving down i70 and 80mph.

If you're going to call it out - call it out for what it is.

If you look at the quality of our stadium and facilities (especially the stadium) we have one of the finest collegiate football programs that 1957 has to offer. Unfortunately, it's 2024.

To call the program outdated doesn't even begin to describe its current state. It's a "football program" only in the technical sense. Do they put on helmets and pads and attempt both running plays and forward passes? Technically, yes. Is it a legit "football team"? I can't in good conscience say yes.
It's like how McDonalds has a kitchen and tables where you can sit and eat what is ostensibly food, but you still wouldn't call it a restaurant.
