Schertz, Sycamores announce 2023-24 Indiana State men’s basketball schedule

WANTED: Passionate Sycamore Fanatics. That You?

Register NOW to join our community of die-hard Sycamore fans.

I'll take any GLVC school over SMWC in a heartbeat. At least they're D2. ISU has zero business playing D3, NAIA, and whatever SMWC is. Trinity Christian last season was a complete joke too, same as Hanover the year before that.

There is literally no difference for us between D2/D3. They're all tune ups and nothing more. You're overthinking something that has no value to do so.

Either play real competition or don't play at all. I'm fine with ONE D2 regular season game in men's basketball if we absolutely have to, but playing anyone lower than that is a complete joke. There's literally no reason for it. I also don't care what everyone else in the MVC is doing. I simply expect better from ISU.

Then donate money for a buy game. Usually runs about $5-10k more to get a D1 in.

Cut the check and they'll schedule to your desires.

If they scheduled a real school they could probably draw an extra 1000 fans and at a minimum that's $10000 in ticket sales. I don't care if both teams are from Terre Haute, the attendance will be lousy. No one that isn't a die hard is going to pay hard earned money to go watch us play St Mary's of the Woods.

The level of competition difference between SMWC and Alabama is insane. We'll be lucky if Bama doesn't beat us by 30 after playing such an awful opponent.

Cool story. Numbers do not back that up.

If you can't afford to cut the check, start a funding drive. Surely there are 1000 people out there like you that would give $10 to make it happen. Be the change.

You’re very passionate about this.

I am not. I see Michigan State and Alabama and look past everything else. Those games have the potential to make your non conference schedule & put you on the national radar. Nothing else matters to me. So not only am I fine with everything. I’m elated with this schedule.

We got two perennial top 25 programs, and we’re on here talking about Saint Mary of the Woods who cares… Deal with it. Focus on the opportunity here.

Man...I was going to go to 1 road game this year. With a family move and another kid popping out I can only afford one road game this year. At first I was going to Bama, no question. Then they dropped Vegas on me and I was like "waaaaitt a minute" and instantly looked at my bank account. Now you're gonna drop Sparty on me? What a f-ing unbelievable schedule. Kudos to whoever is responsible.

But they have both Cobie Barnes AND Lincoln Hale!

Wow, Michigan State is a nice surprise! Is this our first meeting since 79'?

Yes - but around the 20th anniversary of that season, mich st hosted a 'holiday tourney.' I know they tried to recreate the '79 final four -- not sure depaul or penn made it; trees did but didn't meet MSU...

UPDATE

2003-04 -- mich state hosted a "retro '79 final four'

trees lost to depaul 66-78, then lost to penn 48-86

Was about the post Valpo’s schedule ^^

Wanna complain about ours?? They play SMWC and Trinity Christian, some of you would lose your mind

Actually the numbers do back this up. Our two non-D1 games last season were the two lowest attended games of the season, even beating out the incoming blizzard NIU game by 300 two days before Christmas. Also instead of playing 20 MVC games we should be pushing very hard for 22 MVC games so we can drop a Non-D1 game and even a non-conference game that people around here just don't care about.

Last season's attendance averages per home game:
Non-D1= 2429
Non-Conf D1= 2990 (+561)
MVC= 4249 (+1259 / +1820)

Don't worry. They have SMWC as their exhibition game and Trinity X as their first real game. We've yet to schedule an exhibition game yet, and if I was a betting man I'm betting on ISU bringing in our arch-rival Rose Hulman to complete the Vigo County Invitational.

I'm passionate about it because we have no business playing schools like that. Half of the board acts like we're too good for USI, who's actually Division 1, but then I get jumped on by everybody for complaining about playing a very recent former girl's school.

If we want to play down a level we need to stick to Division 2 or the lower levels of D1 (SWAC, Chicago State, etc). There's no reason to dip down into D3 or NAIA for games. There are 363 D1 schools and 313 D2 schools. Shouldn't be that hard to find a somewhat reasonable game.

this is understandable, but don’t you think the other ~360 D1 schools are trying to find early Nov/Dec games against said opponents?? Scheduling is hard for various reasons - costs, locations, teams saying no, etc

But you can’t just say there’s 360 teams we can play from, let’s make that happen. Every team also needs 3-5 days break between games. There are so many moving pieces.

Then do what I mentioned before. Otherwise your passion is hollow bitching.

Call the Foundation and get it set up. I'll be your first $20 spot to your cause.

I would rather play a d3 or d2 school if we can't schedule a decent mid major to play. Playing the Eastern Illinois of the SWAC or any school like that kills your SOS. These non D1 games mean nothing to your metrics. If we have a hell of a team this year, which I think we might, and knock off one of these top 25 teams while winning the games we should, having a solid SOS "could" earn us an NCAA at-large bid. This is all hypothetical of course, but if you have terrible, bottom dwelling teams on the schedule you stand zero chance to have good enough SOS.

*side note* I do not advocate having more than 1 of these games in the regular season. I am simply saying if we have one spot to fill and can't get that decent mid in here, then I would rather have what I stated above.

Yep, the only way you do this is if you're getting a tangential program benefit out of this. Like, if there was an area I wanted to break into recruiting wise, I'd look into playing in a talent center where I could get recruits to potentially come see us that couldn't get to Terre Haute.
